ART TO BENEFIT CHILDHOOD CANCER
Every two years there is a huge art gala in Denver, CO to benefit childhood cancer. (See description of the project at the end.)
Artists from all over and all genres/mediums are invited to submit works of art which will be auctioned off at the gala. All proceeds go to childhood cancer research.
I am Glass Artists of Colorado in Denver, for our part, we asked child cancer patients at the Children's Hospital to draw a picture and then we were to recreate it in glass. This year the kids were asked to draw a picture of their spirit animal. Attached is the drawing I received.
Our glass group is the only part of the gala that does this. All other artists submit any pieces they choose. The last time (2 yrs ago), this glass group raised about $20K with only about a dozen or so pieces submitted. This amount only includes the amount made from my group. I have no idea how much the entire gala raised, but it must have been an amazing amount.
Our pieces do not have to look exactly like the drawing but rather represent it. In addition, we make a separate "related" piece to give to the kid as a gift. The kids and their families are invited to attend. The kids get pass lanyards to wear to the event with a picture of their drawing on it. I will meet my kid that night.
Throughout the night there is great food, artsy mingling, AND lots of stories shared, hugs, smiles, and tears.
For my piece .. it came with a LOT of challenges. My original Plan A was an AMAZING design .... unfortunately ... Plan A bit the dust in the kiln. This after hundreds of hours carving and prepping the mold and then more than 72 hours in the kiln. UGH! At that point, there was no time to redo Plan A.
The picture I have attached here is was not the design of Plan A or Plan B ... BUT rather Plan C. Wowser! I have never had so much trouble with a project. Mixed Media: glass, metals, leather, wood.
At any rate .. it's complete ...........
Attached is the drawing from the kid, a pic of the final piece, and then the gift for the kid. The gift is made up of glass and copper feathers to be used as either a wall hanging or a suncatcher.
Fingers crossed that it brings in some $$$ during the auction.
